THE RULER TO BE BORN IN BETHLEHEM

INTRODUCTION TO MICAH

Micah was a contemporary of Isaiah, but their activities lay apart. Micah lived in the country and was concerned with both Israel and Judah, while Isaiah’s career is closely associated with the fortunes of Jerusalem.

The book of Micah shows a clear understanding of the events of the time. He foresaw the invasions of Shalmaneser and Sennacherib, the dispersion of Israel, and the destruction of Jerusalem. Alone among the prophets he foretells the birth of Christ in Bethlehem, Mic_5:2. “His special office, as a herald of coming judgment, causes a predominant severity of tone; but all harshness is softened into exquisite beauty at the close.

Judgment Sent Forth unto Victory

II. SALVATION, Micah 4-5

2. The Ruler from Bethlehem, Mic_5:1-15

Micah 5:1-15

THE RULER TO BE BORN IN BETHLEHEM

“Now gather yourself in troops, O daughter of troops; A state of siege has been placed against us. They shall strike the ruler of Israel on the cheek with a rod (scepter).

“But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah; From you One shall come forth for Me [who is] to be Ruler in Israel, His goings forth (appearances) are from long ago, From ancient days.” [Gen_49:10; Mat_2:5-12; Joh_7:42]

Therefore, He will give them up until the time When she who is in labor has given birth to a child. Then what is left of His kinsmen Shall return to the children of Israel.

And He shall stand and shepherd and guide His flock In the strength of the LORD, In the majesty of the name of the LORD His God; And they shall dwell [secure in undisturbed peace], Because at that time He shall be great [extending His authority] [Even] to the ends of the earth. [Psa_72:8; Isa_40:11; Zec_9:10; Luk_1:32-33]

This One [the Messiah] shall be our peace. When the Assyrian invades our land And tramples on our citadels and in our palaces, Then shall we raise against him Seven shepherds and eight princes [an overpowering force] among men. [Isa_9:6; Eph_2:14]

They shall devastate the land of Assyria with the sword and The land of Nimrod within her [own] gates. And He (the Messiah) shall rescue us from the Assyrian (all enemy nations) When he attacks our land And when he tramples our territory.

A REMNANT SHALL BE DELIVERED

Then the remnant of Jacob Shall be among many peoples Like dew from the LORD, Like showers on the grass [a source of blessing] Which [come suddenly and] do not wait for man Nor delay for the sons of men. [Psa_72:6; Psa_110:3]

The remnant of Jacob Shall be among the nations, In the midst of many peoples Like a lion among the beasts of the forest, Like a young lion [suddenly appearing] among the flocks of sheep Which, if he passes through, Tramples down and tears into pieces [the nations in judgment], And there is no one to rescue.

Your hand will be lifted up against your adversaries, And all your enemies shall be cut off and destroyed.

“And in that day,” says the LORD, “I will cut off your horses from among you And destroy your chariots [on which you depend]. [Psa_20:7-8; Zec_9:10]

“I will cut off the cities of your land And tear down all your fortifications.

“I will cut off witchcrafts and sorceries from your hand, And you shall have no more fortune-tellers.

“I will also cut off your carved images And your sacred pillars from among you, So that you will no longer worship and bow down To the work of your hands.

“I will root out your Asherim (symbols of the goddess Asherah) from among you And destroy your cities [which are the centers of pagan worship]. [Deu_16:21]

“And in anger and wrath I shall execute vengeance On the nations which have not obeyed [such vengeance as they have not known before].”

Micah 5:1-15
THE DELIVERER FROM BETHLEHEM

This name for Bethlehem recalls Gen_48:7. Though insignificant in size she would outshine her compeers, because of Messiah’s birth, Mat_2:6. As man, our Lord comes from David’s city; but as Son of God, His goings forth are from eternity. Though the Jewish flock rejected Him, He is the Shepherd of men. He is great to the ends of the earth, and has made peace by the blood of His Cross. What though the Assyrian, whether ancient or modern, threaten us, shepherds and princes shall be raised up as delivers, Mic_5:5. The ranks of the democracy hold within themselves unbounded stores of leadership. God’s people refresh the world like dew, and are lionlike in strength and courage, Mic_5:8. Horses, chariots, and walled cities, are classed with witchcrafts, etc., because they weaned away the trust of God’s people. “Thou shalt no more worship the work of thy hands.”

New Covenant Israelite! "And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;  Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee."  Rom 11:17 -18
