THE LORD’S CHOSEN SERVANT

V. DIVINE DELIVERANCE FROM SIN AND CAPTIVITY, Isaiah 40-48

2. The Riches of Grace, Isaiah 42:1-44:23

41. What is to be the work of the Lord’s chosen Servant? Who is this Servant?

Isa 42:1-13

THE LORD’S CHOSEN SERVANT

“Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My Chosen One in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. [Mat_3:16-17]

“He will not call out or shout aloud, Nor make His voice heard in the street.

“A broken reed He will not break [off] And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish [He will not harm those who are weak and suffering]; He will faithfully bring forth justice. [Mat_12:17-21]

“He will not be disheartened or crushed [in spirit]; [He will persevere] until He has established justice on the earth; And the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.” [Rom_8:22-25]

This is what God the LORD says, He who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread out the earth and its produce, Who gives breath to the people on it And spirit to those who walk on it,

“I am the LORD, I have called You (the Messiah) in righteousness [for a righteous purpose], I will also take You by the hand and keep watch over You, And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people [Israel], As a light to the nations (Gentiles),

To open the eyes of the blind, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon And those who sit in darkness from the prison. [Mat_12:18-21]

“I am the LORD, that is My Name; My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved idols.

“Indeed, the former things have come to pass, Now I declare new things; Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”

Sing to the LORD a new song, Sing His praise from the end of the earth! You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, You islands and coastlands, and those who inhabit them [sing His praise]!

Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voices, The villages where Kedar lives. Let the inhabitants of Sela shout for joy, Let them shout joyfully from the tops of the mountains.

Let them give glory to the LORD And declare His praise in the islands and coastlands.

The LORD will go forth like a warrior, He will stir up His zeal like a man of war; He will shout out, yes, He will raise a war cry. He will prevail [mightily] against His enemies.

Isa 42:1-13

41. What is to be the work of the Lord’s chosen Servant? Who is this Servant?

We cannot doubt the application of this passage to our Lord, Mat_12:18-20. The unobtrusiveness of His life and work was clearly demonstrated in every hour of His sojourn among men. He silenced those whom He healed. He stole away from the multitudes for prayer. He stayed in Galilee till His brethren were angry at His reluctance to show Himself to the people. He did not “strive, nor cry.”

How meek and lowly was our Lord! A “reed” is typical of a heart broken by unkindness or a sense of sin. There is no beauty in the russet plume. It will not even serve for the shepherd’s pipe. The “smoking flax” cannot ignite, because hardly able to remain aglow. This is the symbol of one whose love is tardy and cold. But such our Lord does not ignore. He can use the commonest and most unlikely materials.

He is never discouraged and cannot fail; and since He cannot, neither shall the Church, nor shall we. His love and power are pledged to us. Let us sing to Him and of Him.

New Covenant Israelite! "And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;  Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee."  Rom 11:17 -18
