THE LAMENTATIONS OF JEREMIAH

This book has been traditionally ascribed to Jeremiah. Even those who deny him the authorship suggest that the author was a contemporary of Jeremiah, or at least one who saw the ruins of Jerusalem. Since Jeremiah lived in Jerusalem and warned his people about the coming destruction for forty years, and then witnessed this terrible judgement, it is reasonable to consider that Jeremiah was better qualified than anyone known to history to be the author of this book.

In Hebrew text this first four chapters are acrostically arranged. The twenty-two verses in each of these chapters (sixty-six in chapter 3) use the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. In this composition the author reflects upon the terrible calamity that has befallen Jerusalem and recognizes that this judgement of a righteous God. Knowing that God is merciful, he appeals to GOD in prayer.
