Isaiah 50:1-11

ISRAEL’S SIN AND THE SERVANT’S OBEDIENCE

The LORD declares this; “Where is the certificate of divorce By which I have sent your mother away, [O Israel]? Or to which one of My creditors did I sell you [as slaves]? In fact, You were sold for your wickedness [your sin, your injustice, your wrongdoing], And for your transgressions your mother was sent away.

“Why, when I came, was there no man [to greet Me]? When I called, why was there no one to answer? Is My hand really so short that it cannot redeem [My servants]? Or have I no power to rescue? Listen carefully, with My rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers into a desert; Their fish stink because there is no water And die of thirst.

“I clothe the heavens with the blackness [of storm clouds] And make sackcloth [of mourning] their clothing.”

The Lord GOD has given Me [His Servant] the tongue of disciples [as One who is taught], That I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple [as One who is taught].

The Lord GOD has opened My ear, And I have not been rebellious Nor have I turned back.

I turned My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not hide My face from insults and spitting. [Mat_26:67; Mat_27:30; Joh_19:1]

For the Lord GOD helps Me, Therefore, I have not been ashamed or humiliated. Therefore, I have made My face like flint, And I know that I shall not be put to shame. [Luk_9:51; Isa_52:13; Isa_53:10-12]

He who declares Me in the right is near; Who will [dare to] contend with Me? Let us stand up to each other; Who is My adversary? Let him approach Me. [Rom_8:33-35; 1Ti_3:16]

In fact, the Lord GOD helps Me; Who is he who condemns Me [as guilty]? Indeed, they will all wear out like a garment; The moth will eat them. [Heb_1:11-12]

Who is among you who fears the LORD, Who obeys the voice of His Servant, Yet who walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust and be confident in the name of the LORD and let him rely on his God.

Listen carefully, all you who kindle your own fire [devising your own man-made plan of salvation], Who surround yourselves with torches, Walk by the light of your [self-made] fire And among the torches that you have set ablaze. But this you will have from My hand: You will lie down in [a place of] torment. [Isa_66:24]

55. What is the ground of the prophet’s confidence?

It is impossible for God to put away the soul that clings to Him in penitence and faith. Heaven and earth may be searched, but no bill of divorce can be found. See Deu_24:1. And He sends His great servant, our Lord, of whom this chapter is full, to deliver and assure our trembling faith.

Notice the difference in Isa_50:4, between the Authorized Version and the Revised Version which reads, Jehovah hath given me the tongue of them that are taught, that I may know how to sustain with words him that is weary…. He wakeneth mine ear to hear as they that are taught. This quality of teachableness was primarily true of Jesus. It was the habit of His human life to listen to the secret teaching of the Father, breathed into His heart. See Joh_8:28; Joh_8:40. So also must we allow ourselves to be wakened by Him, each morning, that we also may know how to help men more efficiently and tenderly.

From the first, Jesus knew that He must die. See Mar_10:34. But He did not turn back. See Heb_10:5, etc. Was not His choice abundantly vindicated? The Father who justified Him was always near, Joh_8:29. See Joh_16:22. Let us who may be walking in darkness learn from our King to stay ourselves on God.

New Covenant Israelite! "And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;  Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee."  Rom 11:17 -18
